The High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) is an amalgamation of four interconnected large optical telescopes. It is intended to search the electromagnetic spectrum of the sky above the southern hemisphere for sources of particles of the highest energies and to enable basic astronomical and astrophysical research in this area.
H.E.S.S is a large cooperation project between many European (including the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics) and African institutions. The telescope was realized in close cooperation with the University of Namibia and is intended to support international cooperation in basic research and the development of our own scientific and technical talent in southern Africa.
